National elderly care quality registry modernisation

Projects
National elderly care quality registry modernisation

Executive summary

Frontwalker led requirements analysis, UX design and systems development to rebuild a large-scale national quality registry on a new technical platform, creating a more effective and cost-efficient tool for elderly care.

The challenge

1. Business challenge

The existing quality registry needed to be moved to a new technical platform while being improved both technically and functionally, with clearer feedback to support elder-care practices and more cost-effective management.

Key business challenges included:

  • An older system needed to be lifted onto a new technical platform and improved both technically and functionally
  • The registry needed to give clearer feedback to support improved elder-care practices at facility, provider and national level
  • Management of the registry needed to become more cost-effective going forward

2. Technical challenge

The quality registry needed to move to a new technical platform that was still under development, while reusable components needed to be built to support scale and data from the previous version migrated without loss or disruption.

Key technical challenges included:

  • Implementation of the quality registry needed to move onto a new technical platform still under development, requiring the team to both build features and help shape the shared platform itself
  • Reusable components for user and care-unit administration needed to be built to support scale
  • Data from the previous version of the registry needed to be migrated without loss or disruption

What we did

1) Frontwalker’s approach and solution

Frontwalker combined requirements analysis, UX design and systems development to rebuild the quality registry on a new technical platform, with a focus on usability and reusable administrative components.

2) Delivered solution

  • A rebuilt version of the quality registry on a modern technical platform with a focus on usability
  • Reusable administrative components for managing users and care units
  • A completed data migration from the legacy registry to the new platform

3) Engineering & delivery

  • Requirements analysis, information and process modelling, validation and structured requirements documentation using user stories and acceptance criteria
  • UX design and interaction design work, including usability testing
  • Systems development on Java, Spring, MySQL/MariaDB, Liquibase, REST API and Apache Wicket
  • A thorough target-group and desired-outcome analysis used to evaluate multiple conceptual solutions with real users before development began

4) Collaboration model

  • Close work between the consultant and the client's product owner to validate concepts with users before committing to development
  • A blended role split across requirements analysis (~50%), UX design (~30%) and test/test leadership

Business impact/results

Outcomes achieved

  • The quality registry is in full operation on the new platform, more cost-effective to manage with better documentation and modern technology.
  • High user satisfaction with the rebuilt system
  • Improved adherence to preventive-care processes by care staff, directly linked to the improved system
  • Reduced support load and training needs following the rebuild
